EMERALD ASH BORER
The Emerald Ash borer has been the cause of much recent concern. The Emerald Ash Borer is an exotic beetle that was discovered in southeastern Michigan near Detroit in 2002. The adult beetles nibble on ash foliage but cause little damage. The larvae feed on the inner bark of ash trees, disrupting the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients.
The Emerald Ash Borer probably arrived in the United States on solid wood packing material carried in cargo ships or airplanes originating in its native Asia. This beetle was discovered in Ohio in 2003. Since its discover EAB has killed millions of ash trees and caused regulatory agencies to enforce quarantines and impose fines to prevent potentially infected trees, logs or firewood from moving out of areas where EAB occurs.
Usually the presence of the EAB goes undetected until the tree shows symptoms of infestation. These symptoms include the death of the upper third of the tree first, followed by the rest the next year. Click here for more information on the EAB.
The Ohio Valley Group's certified arborists can remove your infected Ash tree and properly dispose of the wood. We can also recommend a replacement tree.
